( Page 6, clause A-I.! ) -Add the following new clause after A-I.!: 'A-!.2 Take a piece constituting the test sample. Lay it flat on a horizontal surface ( see Note under A-I.!). Remove all creases and wrinkles
without distorting the piece. Count with the help of a pick glass or mag-nifying glass, the number of wales per decimetre of the fabric at six different, viz at the two extreme and middle portions on the front as well as at the back. Calculate the average of the six readings to determine the number of wales per decimetre.'

0.1 This Indian Standard ( First Revision) was adopted by the Indian Standards Institution on 13 February 1978, after the draft finalized by the Hosiery Sectional Committee had been approved by the Textile Division Council.
0.2 Stockinette is a plain-knitted tubular cotton fabric. It is mainly used for cleaning machinery, particularly aircraft machinery and for wrapping meat.

0.3 This standard was first published in 1965. The pH value of aqueous extract has been modified and the mass of fabric has been slightly lowered in the present revision. Also, the requirement in respect of dimensional change has been deleted since it has been found, during the implementation of the standard, that keeping the end use in view this requirement does not play any important role in judging the quality of the product.
0.4 This standard is based on IND/ AIR/TC/0555 (c) 'Specification for stockinette', issued by the Ministry of Defence, Government of India. 0.5 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test, shall be rounded off in accordance with IS : 2-1960*. The number of significant places retained in the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.

1. SCOPE

1.1 This standard prescribes the requirements of scoured cotton stockinette.

1.2 This standard does not prescribe the type of finish, feel, general appearance, etc, of the stockinette (see also 3.2).

2. MANUFACTURE
2.1 Yarn - The cotton yarn used for knitting stockinette shall be sofr and evenly spun with 600 to 700 turns per metre. The approximate count shall be 20s (30 tex). 2.2 Stockinette - The stockinette shall be plain-knitted and tubular in shape. It shall be well scoured and free from any filling material. It shall be reasonably free from manufacturing defects, such as large mends, ladders, dropped stitches, holes, cuts, tears and chemical damage.

3. REQUIREMENTS 3.1 The stockinette shall conform to the requirements as given in Table I.

3.2 Sealed Sample - If, in order to illustrate or specify the indeter minable characteristics, such as type of finish, feel, general appearance, etc, a sample has been agreed upon and sealed, the supply shall be in conformity with the sample in such respects.

3.2.1 The custody of the sealed sample shall be a matter of prior agreement between the buyer and the seller.

IS : 3326 · 1978 4. MARKING 4.1 Each piece of stockinette shall be marked with the following: a) Manufacturer's name, initials or trade-mark, if any; b) Length in metres of stockinette in a roll; c) Flat width in centimetres of stockinette; and d) Any other information as required by the buyer.
4.2 HIS Certification Marking The product may also be marked with Standard Mark.

4.2.1 The use of the Standard Mark is governed by the provisions of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 1986 and the Rules and Regulations made thereunder. The details of conditions under which the licence for the use of Standard Mark may be granted to manufacturers or producers may be obtained from the Bureau of Indian Standards. 5. PACKING 5.1 Each piece of stockinette shall be made into a compact roll. A number of such rolls shall then be wrapped in kraft paper and packed in a bale in accordance with either IS: 3086-1965* or IS: 3325-l965t, as the case may be. 6. SAMPLING 6.1 Lot - The number of rolls of stockinette manufactured under similar
conditions of production and delivered to a buyer against one despatch note shall constitute a lot. 6.2 The conformity of the lot shall be determined on the basis of the tests carried out and the rolls selected from the lot. Unless otherwise agreed to between the buyer and the seller, the number of rolls to be selected at random shall be according to col I and 2 of Table 2.

METHOD FOR DETERMINATION OF WALES AND COURSES A-I. WALES
Take a piece constituting the test sample. Lay it flat on a horizontal surface (see Note). Remove all creases and wrinkles without distorting the piece. Count with the help of a pick glass or magnifying glass the number of wales including any fraction on one side and similarly the number of wales including any fraction on the other side of the stockinette. Add the two values so obtained.
NOTE A board of 28 em width and 50 cm length shall be inserted inside the tubular fabric, to facilitate counting of wales and courses of stockinette, which has a loose texture.
